We stopped here Thursday afternoon and walked 1.3 miles around the entire base of the huge rock. Not expecting this to be so awesome, we were totally awe inspired. There were at least 7 climbers that we could see on the rock doing the technical climbing required to tackle this type of climbing. Terry struggled at the beginning of the hike which was up hill, but then it leveled out some and we made it the entire way. During the last half of the hike we could hear thunder and when we got back to the visitor's center, the storm landed with full force.
From the National Park website: "Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Once hidden, erosion has revealed Devils Tower. This 1347 acre park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are seen. Also known as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906." http://www.nps.gov/deto/
