8/25/08 Erie Canal and Lake Ontario

The Erie Canal brings back memories of 8th grade history class for me in Miss Lindsay’s room at Ponderosa Jr. Hi. Walking along the Erie Canal at Lockport NY seemed like we had gone back in time because it looked just like the pictures in the history books. The water was right near the top of the canal and the boats seemed suspended in mid-air when you were on the street beside the canal. Terry toured the cruise boat company and I wandered around in an art studio with many artists in residence galleries.

Old Fort Niagara has many different wars that we learned about during our two hour walking tour. Terry is becoming a shutter-bug so we don’t forget it all. Wow, so much to a fort that evolved from 1759 until WWI where it trained soldiers going overseas to fight in Europe.

The campground at 4 Mile Creek has 275 camping spots and the entire thing is mowed and manicured lawn. Lake Ontario is 27 miles wide at this point and when it is clear you can see Toronto in the distance. Amazing!!!
