After a slow start our day picked up really fast. Bobsled fast that is. We were in the bobsled for the second run of the afternoon at the Bobsled Run. For the right price, we got to wear helmets and ride as the second and third men in a four-man bobsled. What a thrill! The sled has rubber tires and the track in the original concrete track used in the 1932 and 1980 Olympics. The start is at the half-mile point and down you go with a professional driver and brakeman doing the work. The g-forces around the curves were high even though we weren’t going all that fast, but at the time, it seemed very fast. The S-curve really threw us around. I bounced my helmet off of Terry’s and the side several times. What a thrill! I just couldn’t stop smiling and shaking inside after we were done.
The rest of the day was rather bland compared to that although going to the top of the 120-meter ski jump tower was a thrill also. Way up in the air, those ski jumpers are looking almost straight down as they stand up to go barreling down the ramp. What nerves of steal they have! Not sure that I would ever have had the nerve to try that. At the base of the hill there is trampolines and bungee cords where the freestyle aerialists were practicing. They also practice their jumps into a swimming pool. The Irish Festival was held here today and covering the grounds were musical acts, beer gardens, crafts and keg and hay bale throwing events. Lots of fun for all!
After a tour of the Olympic Training Center we drove to Whiteface Mt., but it was too late to ride the gondola so we will do it tomorrow. Driving the motor home down Main Street in the Village of Lake Placid is not easy feat either. Terry has had lots of training on small, narrow roads with people crossing in front of him. This time through town wasn’t quite as harrowing as yesterday. Tomorrow we hope to find a parking space somewhere near Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream store and the Official Olympic Shop. Tonight we had a grand dinner of steak and potato salad. I’m hoping to narrow my losses to Terry at gin rummy. Can’t seem to get any closer than 500 or so point to him. He is tired tonight so maybe I’ll have a chance.
