(Aiden’s 4th Birthday and it is sure strange to not be nearby the help celebrate his big day!) We stayed two nights here to recharge our batteries. After swapping stories about life, health and other trivia with other campers and the camp host, we were on the road again toward Duluth on Thursday morning about noon. Wouldn’t want to rush into a busy day of driving. Our morning routine goes something like this: I get up between 8 and 9:00 and walk Matty then read or journal as I am doing now. Terry gets up when he wants to and then has breakfast and showers. Then we get ready to get on the road in a very leisurely fashion. If we are in RV park with check out at 11am then we have to hurry the routine up, but with checkout in the afternoons at the state and national parks around here, we just move when we want to do so. Not quickly, I might add!
This 145 mile scenic byway has taken us two days to travel. With speeds at or below 55 mgh, we got 10.43 miles to the gallon – Wow! The highest previously was 7.23 in South Dakota on I-90 so this is fantastic. Speed really does make a difference.
The St. Croix River left us behind shortly after we left the state park and we disappointed to see it go. Truly beautiful and reportedly spectacular in the fall with the tamarack and the other trees decked out in their finest colors. The air is cool this morning and feels like fall is just nipping at the heels of summer. Only 77 degrees for the high today! Wonderful traveling weather.
RV problems appear gain in the form of the battery light glowing on the dash. Seems to be a faulty indicator, but we will keep a close eye on it. Five new batteries to the tune of over $500 shouldn’t be a concern. Several days without problems have really been wonderful.
North to Duluth and up the North Shore Scenic Drive this afternoon. Lake Superior is beautiful and very calm today which is uncommon we are told. Didn’t stop in Duluth except for gas at $3.66. We’ll explore when we come back through here on our way back down. Once we’ve seen Grand Portage, we will come back down this road and explore it on our way back. No way to loop this road into another road and stay in the U.S.
Camped at Eckbeck State Park on Hwy 1 north of Duluth along the North Shore Scenic Byway inland from Silver Bay. No cell service or TV for the first time since the Black Hills of South Dakota. Having it every day has been fun because I send pictures to Amy, Dave, Zak, Cailen and Shelly using their email addresses or cell phone numbers. Texting with pictures is a whole new way for me to feel connected to the family which I am missing terribly. Today is Aiden’s fourth birthday. I’m sure all the grandkids will have grown a ton, which we are gone. Keeping in touch by email and blogging has been more spotty than I expected. Terry doesn’t want to stop for me to get connections so the phone has been a wonderful addition to communicating with the family. Every few days I insist or we get a RV park with connection. This last RV park had connection, but my wireless wouldn’t work so thank heavens for the phone.
