8/31/08 Walking along the main street where Olympic stars have walked
The museum of the Olympics is in the same building as the hockey rink where in 1980 the college-age hockey team beat the Soviet professional hockey team in the "Miracle on Ice" game. The many exhibits of the museum were fascinating especially the torch display, the old bobsleds and ice skates and the many pictures from the Olympics that jogged our memories of days gone by. What a thrill to see this type of memorabilia.
The Village of Lake Placid has a very narrow main street with shops lining both sides for about a half-mile. The wide variety of shops gave us many options for the refrigerator magnet shopping that was necessary. The RV refrigerator isn’t magnetic, but the range hood is so that is where our trip magnets are being displayed until we get home. The trolley took us on a trip around Lake Mirror which is right next to main street and it felt as if we were in a Currier and Ives painting of a pond with rowboat and canoes from years gone by. The old homes along the lake (more of a pond) were very stately and their beaches were grass that was pretty and green. Our lunch of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was scrumptious. Since we’d never had it before, I was excited to try their flavors and wasn’t disappointed. Terry’s banana split with hot fudge sauce was really over the top.
We drove about 7 miles north of town to the state park at Wilmington Notch where we got the last camping spot on the Sunday night of Labor Day weekend. The AAA-rated campground that we had been at for two days wasn’t up to par at all so we were happy to have a new spot. Again, we played gin rummy into the wee hours of the night, but I didn’t make up any ground. At least I feet like I am giving him more competition than earlier in the trip. I am determined to narrow the gap before we get back home. Maybe I can keep him playing once we get home. If we play long enough, I may have a chance to pick up on the 2,000-point difference in the score.
