9/20/08 Corvettes and SuperModifes

9/20/08 Corvettes and SuperModifes
What a mix of activities in one day. The news last night told of a huge gathering of 15,000 Corvettes and 45,000 people converging on Effingham, Illinois for the 14th Annual Funfest: Cavalcade of Corvettes at the Mid American Motorworks. “This event is hosted each year by Mike Yager. Mike is the founder of this event, which shows off about 15,000 Corvettes, and brings in approximately 50,000 spectators each and every year. This event keeps increasing the number of attendees every year. No cost to attend; admission is totally free. What more could you ask for. If you are a car enthusiast, a Corvette enthusiast, you should definitely try to be here. All of these beautiful Corvettes, all years/makes/models, all in one outdoor location, and free to attend. All there for you to enjoy. If you don't want to walk the entire Corvette arena, there will be a double decker bus, that you can ride to tour the show grounds throughout the entire Corvette event.”

Wow, they were kidding, Corvettes for acres and acres, all shiny and gorgeous to drool over. So Terry and I joined the drooling thousands and walked the grounds and viewed the Museum also. Of course we took advantage of the helicopter rides to view the grounds. Another first for me and with Terry in the front seat beside the driver, he took some great pictures to share with you all.

Tired an sunburned, we headed toward St. Louis and arrived at the KOA 12 miles east of there about 5:15 to learn we were now back in central time. Fine with us! We were tired and ready to settle in for the evening. And then…..we heard the familiar sound of cars revving their engines as though they were racing. Yep, we found a dirt track and 5 types of modified cars. Really cool! Couldn’t believe how much dirt was in the air as the cars raced around the track! We were covered. Sure wish that all of our racing friends could have been with us!
