May 14 2009 Hwy 12 Bryce Canyon to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

Highway 12 goes from Bryce Canyon into the Grand Staircase Escalante Nationanl Monument and we traveled 125 miles to it's end in Torrey, Utah. Wow, the diversity of landscape was unimaginable...desert to rock to trees to low valley's and high 9,000+ foot mountain passes with downgrades of 8 to 14%. The old RV really was put through it's paces because there were many ups and downs...probably at least four summits over 8,000 feet both ways. So 250 miles and almost 7 hours later we were back at the entrance to Bryce Canyon where we stayed in the RV park of Ruby's Inn where we paid way to much for just one night. A couple from Germany was camping in a rented RV next to us and we each shared the highlights of our trips. So many languages can be heard every day and many we just guess at the origins and never know for sure if we are right. German and Spanish are most recognizable by us both.

Calf Creek Canyon was the highlight of the trip. The rocks were huge, the shade was cool and the colors were vivid. Our RV was too long to go into their campground and for that we were very disappointed. Rock climbing, bicycling, off-roading and more could be done all in this narrow canyon. There are several small towns along this road and it is very remote. No cell service and some areas didn't have electricity until the 50s. Not a bad place to be in May, but I sure wouldn't want to visit when it turns hot.

9,600 foot pass with evergreens and huge forests of either birch or aspen. Neither of us can remember how to tell the difference and there wasn't anyone to ask...yep, we need to buy a book because we just guess at the names of some trees.

Powell Point, 10,810 ft., in the distance where John Wesley Powell climbed it when he was exploring and surveying in the late 1800s.
