May 19, 2009 Kanab UT to Page AZ

The old western movie sets were cool since we love the old westerns and watch them over and over again. All of the pieces were moved from their original location. This area was a favorite of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and many others. If our RV was dust-proof, we could have driven the back roads in the area to see many more actual sets. However we had places to see so off we went in 88 degree heat.

Hwy 89 east of Kanab, UT runs along the southern rim of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Congress created this in 1996 to protect a huge area on Utah. Very wise investment for America!

Lake Powell is a welcome rest for the eyes from the desert scenery. The cruise we took was an hour and a half into the main channel and south into Antelope Canyon. The canyon narrows down to the point that the big tour boat has to back out of it while negotiating tight corners. The captain said he enjoyed showing off his backing abilities.

The majority of these house boats are privately owned, but people can't live on them full time due to the restrictions on the lake. Renting a huge houseboat and touring the lake seems like a good idea, but the scenery doesn't change from channel to channel like it does on Lake Roosevelt so I'm not sure that I would like this lake, other than the vast amount of water there is to play on down here.

The Glen Canyon Dam

Rocks and desert flowers are both amazing.

The Colorado below Glen Canyon Dam.
Above the dam and below the dam as we crossed on Hwy 89. Okay, I'll admit it, I wasn't wearing my seatbelt as I moved quickly to get pictures from both sides of the RV. Pretty cool!
